Sauvé and Cunningham Score for Providence
Bridgeport, CT -- The Providence Bruins fell to the
Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-2 this
evening at the Webster Bank Arena. Maxime
Sauvé and Craig
Cunningham scored for Providence.
After opening the 2012-13 season with a disappointing 3-1
loss to Manchester last night, the P-Bruins traveled to visit The Sound Tigers
at Webster Bank Arena looking for redemption. The team got off to a rocky start
as Bridgeport took control of play during the opening minutes. However,
Providence quickly shook off their bus legs and took a 1-0 lead off a goal form
Sauvé. Ryan Spooner and Jamie Tardif assisted on the opening
goal. The goal and the assists marked the second point for Sauvé, Spooner and
Tardif in as many nights. About ten minutes later at 17:34 Bridgeport tied it
up to send the teams into the first intermission even at one.
It was Bridgeport who came out flying again in the second
period as Nino Niederreiter's power
play goal at 4:35 gave The Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead. Despite the early set back,
Providence kept getting opportunities in front of the Bridgeport's net, but
they were unable to find an opening. The P-Bruins out shot The Sound Tigers 15
to 8 in the second period however they were unable to tie it up and went into
the final intermission trailing 2-1.
Bridgeport once again got on the board early in the final frame
and took a 3-1 lead after Jon Landry beat Michael
Hutchinson with a backhander at 5:51. Not to be deterred, Providence still
at Kevin Poulin and Bridgeport full
throttle. Their hard work paid off at 11:15 of the third when Cunningham
tallied his first of the season to bring the P-Bruins within one goal. Carter Camper and Jordan Caron got the helpers on the goal. Despite out shooting
Bridgeport for the second period in a row, Providence could not find a way past
Poulin. The Sound Tigers secured the win with an empty net goal with three
seconds to play, giving the club a 4-2 victory.
Hutchinson suffered the loss, blocking 23 of 26 shots,
while Poulin's 29 saves were good enough for the win.
