P-BRUINS FALL IN SHOOTOUT TO WHALE 4-3
Back at The Dunk Sunday vs. Portland Pirates
Hartford, CT - The Providence Bruins fell to the Connecticut Whale in a shootout 4-3 Saturday evening at the XL Center. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Trent Whitfield, Jordan Caron and Jordan Smotherman and in the shootout from Jamie Arniel. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday at 4:05 p.m. for Poster Night against the Portland Pirates.
The Whale took a 1-0 lead at the 11:15 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. John Mitchell tallied his fifth goal of the season, with Blake Parlett and Evgeny Grachev recording the assists. Providence tied the game at one at the 18:22 mark, while on the power play. Maxime Sauve had the puck in the corner and worked it to the high slot for Zach Hamill. He put a shot on net and Whitfield was there to pick up the rebound and score his 13th goal of the season. The game went into the first intermission tied at one.
Providence took its first lead of the game at the 13:26 mark of the second period, while on the power play. Matt Bartkowski put a shot towards the net and it was picked up by Hamill. He shot the puck towards the net and the rebound went to Caron, who scored his tenth goal of the season. The P-Bruins made it 3-1 at the 15:22 mark. Kirk MacDonald worked the puck around the boards and passed it off to Whitfield. He sent the puck to the front of the goal, where Smotherman grabbed it and backhanded it into the back of the net for his 13th goal of the season. Connecticut pulled within a goal at the 16:22 mark. Derek Couture netted his first goal of the season, while Pavel Valentenko and Francis Lemieux picked up the assists. Providence led 3-2 going into the second intermission.
Connecticut tied the game at three with a shorthanded goal at the 16:34 mark of the third period. Grachev scored his 16th goal of the season, while Mitchell and Wade Redden had the assists. The game went into overtime.
After a scoreless overtime the game went into a shootout. Arniel scored in round three to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 advantage, but the Whale's Dale Weise tied it at one in round four. In round eight the Whale took the lead for good with a goal from Lemieux on their way to the 4-3 shootout victory.
Anton Khudobin stopped 26 of 29 shots in regulation and six shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Dov Grumet-Morris made 34 saves in regulation and seven saves in the shootout for the Whale. The P-Bruins were 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
