SECOND PERIOD PROPELS P-BRUINS PAST THUNDERBIRDS IN SHOOTOUT

Springfield, MA - Three straight goals scored 3:14 apart in the second period helped propel the Providence Bruins past the Springfield Thunderbirds for a 4-3 shootout victory on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center. Forwards Brett HarrisonFabian Lysell, and Anthony Richard scored goals in regulation, while John Farinacci scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round.  

 

How It Happened

  • Adam Gaudette’s wrist shot from the top of the slot zipped into the upper-right corner of the net, giving the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead with 6:05 remaining in the first period. 
  • Gaudette scored his second goal in a row on a breakaway after he deked to the forehand to extend the Springfield lead to 2-0 with 1:44 left in the first frame.
  • While playing 5-on-3, Lysell snuck a wrist shot through traffic from the slot that deflected off a defender and trickled across the goal line, cutting the Thunderbirds’ lead to 2-1 with 14:49 to play in the second period. Georgii Merkulov and Reilly Walsh were credited with the assists. 
  • Joey Abate dropped a short pass to Harrison in the left circle, where he backhanded the puck into the back of the net, tying the game at 2-2 with 12:12 remaining in the second period. Dan Renouf was credited with a secondary assist. 
  • 32 seconds after the tying goal, Ian Mitchell left the puck for Richard at the bottom of the left circle, where he snapped a shot into the top shelf of the net, giving the P-Bruins a 3-2 lead. Jayson Megna received an assist as well.
  • Keean Washkurak deflected in a shot from the left point to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:52 left in the third frame. 
  • Farinacci scored the lone shootout goal in the sixth round to win the game for Providence. 

 

Stats

  • Lysell has points in five straight games with eight total in that span.
  • Richard has seven goals in his last six games. 
  • Walsh has assists in each of his last three games. 
  • Goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced. The P-Bruins totaled 40 shots. 
  • The Providence power play went 1-for-4, and the penalty kill was 3-for-3.
