PIRATES PROVE TOO MUCH FOR P-BRUINS

Providence Falls to Division Leaders 5-3

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins received two goals second star Jamie Arniel and another from Trent Whitfield, who extended his point-streak to nine games in the loss.

Providence took control of the game early in the opening minutes of the first period, controlling the momentum in the Pirates zone. Arniel put the P-Bruins on the board first, collecting a rebound form a Lane MacDermid shot and blasting it past a sliding Jeff Jakaitis. David Laliberte also assisted on the opening goal. Providence continued to pressure a surging Portland squad, drawing a penalty at the 9:04 mark. The Pirates were able to capitalize on the man-advantage off a goal from Marc-Andre Gragnani, sending the game into the first intermission tied at one.

The P-Bruins couldn't stay out of the box in the early minutes of the second period, allowing the Pirates to tally their second power play goal of the game at the 4:49 mark to take a 2-1 lead. The teams each took turns in the sin bin, but it was Portland that found the back of the net at 13:47 to take a 3-1 lead. Providence wasn't to be outdone however, as the club answered two minutes later with a power play goal of its own. Jordan Caron found Colby Cohen and passed across to Arniel who drilled a shot past Jakaitis for his second goal of the game. Providence tied the game a minute later at 16:31 of the second when Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman found Whitfield in the slot and left Jakaitis looking when he sent a one-timer top-shelf. However, Portland would retake the lead with just 0.4 seconds remaining to go into the second intermission leading 4-3.

Despite bringing Anton Khudobin in to relieve Michael Hutchinson to start the third period, Portland rookie Alex Biega found the back of the net only 1:01 in to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead. Portland's late second period and early third period proved to be enough as they held off Providence's offensive efforts for the 5-3 win.

Hutchinson suffered the loss, blocking 18 shots through two periods before being relieved by Khudobin, who made seven saves in 18:20 of ice time. Jakaitis earned the win, blocking 27 shots.

The P-Bruins are back in action with a three-game week next weekend, traveling to Worcester on Friday, March 25 before heading south to face the Binghamton Senators on Saturday. The club returns to The Dunk on Sunday, March 27 for a 4:05 p.m. tilt against the Connecticut Whale for Lip Balm Night.
