PROVIDENCE BRUINS NAME BILLY SWEEZEY 28TH CAPTAIN IN TEAM HISTORY


Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins announced today that Billy Sweezey has been named the 28th captain in team history.
“Billy is everything that we talk about in leadership,” said Providence Bruins Head Coach Trent Whitfield. “He does everything that encapsulates what a captain is. The way he is on and off the ice, as a person and a player. He is a team guy. He does everything a captain should do.”
Past Providence Bruins captains include Patrick Brown (2024-25), Josiah Didier (2021-23), Paul Carey (2019-21), Jordan Szwarz (2018-19), Tommy Cross (2015-18), Craig Cunningham (2014-15), Mike Moore (2013-14), Trent Whitfield (2009-13), Jeremy Reich (2008-09, 2010-11), Nate Thompson (2007-08), Jay Leach (2005-07), Jay Henderson (2004-05), Brent Thompson (2004-05), Rich Brennan (2002-04), Dennis Bonvie (2001-02), Lee Goren (2001-02), Joe Hulbig (2001-02), Keith McCambridge (2001-02), Brandon Smith (1999-01), Sean Pronger (1999-00), Dennis Vaske (1998-99), Bill Armstrong (1997-98), Martin Simard (1995-97), Marc Potvin (1995-96), Guy Larose (1994-95), Jamie Huscroft (1993-94), and Peter Laviolette (1992-93).
Sweezey, 30, signed with the Bruins organization in July of 2024 and immediately joined the leadership group when he first suited up with the Providence Bruins the following October.
Entering his seventh season of professional hockey, the Hanson, Massachusetts, native has also served as an alternate captain with the Cleveland Monsters. In 338 career AHL games between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Cleveland, and Providence, Sweezey has totaled seven goals and 50 assists for 57 points, along with 434 penalty minutes and a plus-23 rating. The defenseman posted career-bests in assists (16), points (17), and plus-minus rating (plus-21) during the 2025-26 season with the P-Bruins. Sweezey has also skated in nine career NHL games, all with Columbus, recording one assist.
