P-BRUINS EDGED BY COMETS IN SEASON OPENER


Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins were edged by the Utica Comets 2-1 in the season opener on Friday night at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. Forward Brendan Gaunce netted the lone goal for Providence in the final frame.
How It Happened
Gabe Klassen received a pass in the slot, turned and fired a shot into the upper-left corner of the net to give the Comets a 1-0 lead with 15:29 remaining in the first period.
While cutting towards the net, Ben Steeves wacked a puck out of mid-air and down across the goal line to extend the Utica lead to 2-0 with 2:01 to play in the second frame.
On the rush, Ivan Ivan slid a pass ahead for Gaunce to send him on a breakaway, where he slipped a shot between the goaltender’s legs to cut the Comets’ lead to 2-1 with 14:15 left in the third period. Joey Abatereceived a secondary assist.
Stats
Goaltender Jiri Patera stopped 22 of 24 shots faced. The P-Bruins totaled 21 shots.
The power play went 0-for-4 and the penalty kill was 2-for-2.
