HANAS, P-BRUINS TOP THUNDERBIRDS IN OVERTIME IN FIRST OF TWO PRESEASON MATCHUPS
Springfield, MA – Forward Cross Hanas netted the game-winning goal in overtime and added an assist as the Providence Bruins topped the Springfield Thunderbirds 4-3 on Friday night at the MassMutual Center in the first of two preseason matchups. Maxim Andreev recorded two assists, while Robert Cronin, Kalle Väisänen, and Ryan Tattle also found the back of the net.
How It Happened
While on the power play, Hanas slid the puck down to the crease for Andreev, who made a no-look, backhanded pass to Cronin in the slot, where he snapped a shot past the stick of the goaltender to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead just 1:14 into the game.
Dylan MacKinnon slung a wrist shot from the right point that rebounded out to Väisänen at he left post, where he chipped the rebound into the open net to extend the Providence lead to 2-0 with 4:20 remaining in the first period. Ryan McGuire received a secondary assist.
On the rush, Andreev dropped the puck for Tattle crossing the blueline, where he walked it into the right circle and fired a wrist shot by the glove of the goaltender to give the P-Bruins a 3-0 lead just 50 seconds into the third period. Tobie Paquette-Bisson was credited with a secondary assist.
Chris Wagner received a cross-ice feed in the left circle and slung a wrist shot past the sliding netminder to cut the Providence lead to 3-1 with 7:15 to play in the third frame.
Matthew Demelis collected a pass in front of the crease and flipped a shot under the crossbar to shrink the P-Bruins lead to 3-2 with 5:19 left in the third period.
Justin Carbonneau chipped a shot from above the crease that rebounded into the air before he batted it across the goal line to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:20 remaining in the third period.
Just 2:09 into the extra frame, Hanas collected a feed from Chris Ortiz at the top of the left circle and fired a wrist shot inside the left post for a power play goal to give the P-Bruins a 4-3 win in overtime. Wyatt Bongiovanni was credited with a secondary assist.
Stats
Goaltender Simon Zajicek stopped 25 of 28 shots faced. The P-Bruins totaled 27 shots.
The power play went 2-for-2 and the penalty kill was 4-for-4.
