TWO GOALS EACH FROM BLIDH AND CZARNIK LEAD P-BRUINS OVER ROCKET
Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Laval Rocket Wednesday night 6-3, sweeping their two-game season series against the new AHL team. The P-Bruins got two goals apiece from Anton Blidh and Austin Czarnik along with goals from Colby Cave and Jordan Szwarz while Dan Vladar made his 3rd start of the season in net.
The line of Colton Hargrove, Cave and Zach Senyshyn had a solid first period and it was them that got Providence out in front at 5:29. Senyshyn started the play by feeding Cave at center ice, and Cave led Hargrove into the offensive zone. After his pass, Cave crashed towards Rocket goalie Michael McNiven as Hargrove led him towards the net. Despite falling and being on his knees, Cave was able to get the puck by McNiven for his seventh goal of the season and the P-Bruins held a 1-0 into the first intermission.
Providence dominated the second period offensively, scoring three times in the period and twice on the power play. The first came six seconds into a man-advantage when the P-Bruins played tic-tac-toe to score a beautiful goal at 3:53. Czarnik started the play at the right point and found Hargrove behind the net. He quickly fed Szwarz at the right hash and Szwarz buried his team-leading 18th goal of the season to give Providence a 2-0 lead. Blidh made it 3-0 at 6:32 on a tough angle shot from the left wing corner, scoring his eighth goal of the season and chasing McNiven from the game. Chris Terry’s slapper at 7:47 got Laval on the board, but the P-Bruins ended the period with another power play goal. With just 1:34 remaining, Czarnik ripped his 16th goal of the season by new goaltender Zachary Fucale as Providence brought a 4-1 lead into the locker room!
Blidh and Payerl hooked up again to start the third period, as the combination that scored earlier duplicated their feat 2:16 into the final period. After the Rocket turned over the puck, Payerl grabbed it and skated behind the net. He sent a centering feed to Blidh flying in and Blidh put home his ninth goal of the season. The goal marked his second two-goal performance of the season, both coming at the expense of Laval. Kerby Rychel netted two late goals for the Rocket to make things interesting, but an empty netter for Czarnik with nine seconds remaining sealed a 6-3 Providence victory!
Vladar stopped 23 of 26 shots for his second AHL win of the season. McNiven stopped 11 of 14 shots before getting pulled while Fucale stopped 14 of 16 after entering in the second. Providence was 2-6 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action Friday when they on the Rochester Americans at 7:05pm in the second game of their three-game road trip.
