P-BRUINS FALL 4-3 IN OT DESPITE TWO GOALS FROM FITZGERALD
Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Providence Bruins fell in overtime to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins Saturday night in 4-3 in a rematch of last year’s Atlantic Division Semi-Finals. The P-Bruins got two goals from Ryan Fitzgerald and another from Colby Cave while Zane McIntyre made his seventh start of the season in goal.
Providence wasted little time taking an early lead, scoring just 93 seconds into the opening period. Matt Grzelcyk grabbed the puck in his own defensive zone and sent a pass across the neutral zone to Fitzgerald who had split the defense. He sped in towards Casey DeSmith on a breakaway and scored his second goal of the season to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Providence continued to control play throughout the period, but DeSmith kept his club in the game as the Bruins were up one after 20 minutes.
Cave doubled the Providence lead 8:01 into the second period thanks to his first goal of the season. Sena Acolatse fought hard for the puck behind the net and eventually won possession and found Cave at the right dot. Hs shot through traffic fluttered by everyone as the P-Bruins grabbed a 2-0 lead. The Penguins responded quickly with a 3-on-2 break and got back within a goal at 10:19. Kevin Czuczman scored his first goal of the season going five-hole on McIntyre, but Providence still held a 2-1 edge into the second intermission.
The third period was an exciting back-and-forth battle that ultimately saw the Penguins tie the score. Jarred Tinordi blasted a shot from the right point that Thomas DiPauli tipped by McIntyre for his fifth goal of the season at 6:58, knotting things up 2-2. From the same location at the point, Andrey Pedan gave Wilkes-Barre Scranton what they thought would be the lead for good, as Pedan’s second goal of the season made things 3-2 Penguins with under three minutes to play. However with just 28.9 seconds left in the game, Fitzgerald tipped in a shot from Grzelcyk for his second goal of the game to send things to overtime tied 3-3.
The overtime did not last long for Providence unfortunately, as just 20 seconds in Ryan Haggerty took advantage of a 2-on1 break and scored his sixth goal of the season to send the P-Bruins home with a 4-3 loss.
McIntyre stopped 25 of 29 shots while DeSmith stopped 33 of 36. Providence was 0-6 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their brief two-game road trip tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Springfield for a 3:05pm match-up with the Thunderbirds.
