The Providence Bruins spent the holiday week on the road for a trio of games, and the team took four of a possible six points on the trip. P-BRUINS WEEK IN REVIEW: 11/15/17 – 11/21/17

Injuries at the NHL level have depleted the Providence Bruins roster, and recently that has shown on the scoreboard. After a hot start in which they started 6-1-0-0, the P-Bruins entered this weekend’s two-game home stand against the Hershey Bears on their longest winless drought of the season. That drought extended to four games (0-2-2) after Friday’s 4-1 loss, as despite Justin Hickman’s first goal of the season Providence couldn’t overcome an early deficit.

P-BRUINS WEEK IN REVIEW: 11/2/17 – 11/7/17

While just one win in three tries with two shutouts mixed in this weekend for the Providence Bruins may not seem like a successful week, a closer look may prove differently with the amount of success the team’s recent alumni have had in Boston. The P-Bruin roster has been depleted due to injuries their parent club has suffered, though thanks to the efforts of several Providence players Boston has been able to weather the storm. Eight players currently on Boston’s roster played in Providence last season with four of those players seeing time in the ocean state this season.

P-BRUINS SEASON IN REVIEW: VETERAN FORWARDS

From players coming over from other organizations to NHL caliber talent rejoining the team, Providence had no issues at forward with the veteran guys they had on their team. Some contributed heavily to the P-Bruins success while others were able to help both Providence and Boston during the season. Topping the list of additions were two players that skated together most of the season and each had career years in Jordan Szwarz and Wayne Simpson. Both players joined the club on a PTO prior to the season, but were each awarded season-long deals after proving how valuable they were to the 2016-17 team.

P-BRUINS SEASON IN REVIEW: VETERAN DEFENSEMEN

One thing that made the 2016-17 Providence Bruins season one of the most successful in franchise history was the core group of veterans in the locker room. Perhaps no group better illustrated this than the veteran defenseman who were on the roster from opening day until the end of the season. Their play, in addition to Zane McIntyre’s, made Providence one of the toughest teams to score against as they allowed to fourth fewest goals in the AHL with the second best goals allowed per game average. Add in the ability to score like no group of P-Bruins blue liners have in years and it is easy to see why this group was so important.

P-BRUINS LOSE AT HOME FOR FIRST TIME IN TWO MONTHS

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Scott Laughton scored the game-winner and Rob Zepp was 33-for-34 as the Providence Bruins dropped their first contest at home in two months, falling to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 2-1 Friday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

In the opening period, the Bruins had the first power play, first five shots, and the first goal. Both Colin Stuart and Paul Carey had chances in front that were blocked, but Stuart eventually put the home team on top. At 17:06, Stuart re-directed a Steve Eminger wrister that came from the blue line, beating Zepp on the man advantage.

The Phantoms retaliated with almost literally a last-second goal. With 1.1 seconds left on the clock, the visiting team answered on the power play as Adam Comrie snuck a wrister past Jeremy Smith from the right point.

Neither team scored in the second, and the P-Bruins limited the Phantoms to only four shots. Providence had more bids in the second period (10) than Lehigh Valley had in the first two combined (9).

Neither team scored in the third either, as Providence and Lehigh Valley each had seven bids on the opposing goaltender. Stuart had a big shot block, taking one off of the leg in the slot on a point-blank shot during the Flyers affiliate’s power play. Later in the period, Jason Akeson hit the left post. The Bruins had a few good chances of their own, including hitting the post a minute later.

In Overtime, Smith made a save at the near post, going into a split to stop a Mark Alt breakaway with 2:37 left. Eminger nearly had a one-timer on the near doorstep as time expired, but the puck hopped over his stick.

In the shootout, the first four shooters were held off of the board. Scott Laughton scored the game-winner with a triple fake on the right side of the crease. As the Bruins’ last hope, Khokhlachev maneuvered the puck past Zepp, but his shot hit the post as he approached the goal line.

It was the first loss in a shootout (or overtime) for the Bruins at home all season, and it snapped the 11-game home win streak. The team has registered points in seven games in a row, the previous six all victories.

The Bruins hit the road for a Saturday evening contest against the Springfield Falcons at 7:00pm.
