P-BRUINS SINK PIRATES IN FINALE
Providence Finishes 2011-12 Campaign wiht 3-2 Victory
Providence,
RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland
Pirates 3-2 this evening at the Dunkin'
Donuts Center. Providence earned their goals from Ryan Spooner, Maxime Sauvé, and Colby Cohen.
Looking to finish their regular season with a win, the Providence Bruins
started their home game with energy.
With both teams exerting pressure in each zone, the game would remain
scoreless for the rest of the period. Five penalties were called, yet neither
team achieved a goal on their power plays. An aggressive fight broke out
between Mark Louis and Bobby Robins, leading to a five-minute
major penalty for both players at 9:53, and creating increased tension between
the teams. Robins recently
surpassed 1,000 career penalty minutes on April 7th. The minutes dwindled down with a Pirates
power play in which the P-Bruins did an effective job at
keeping the puck out of their zone.
The 2nd period opened up with a five-on-three, because Kyle MacKinnon received a penalty for
tripping at 20:00. Michael Hutchinson made 10 saves, while
Peter Mannino stopped the puck 13
times.
The P-Bruins faced a five-on-three challenge at the beginning of the
second frame. Marc-Antoine Pouliot
scored on the power play assisted by David
Rundblad and Nathan Oystrick at
1:08. Carter Camper was down shortly after due to a collision, but
eventually made his way back to the bench. Five penalties were called during the 20 minutes. Hutchinson protected the net through
these disadvantages. MacKinnon, Camper and Calle Ridderwall all made attempts during power plays but were
stopped by Mannino. At 14:00, Spooner tipped the puck in
the net earning his first goal of the season assisted by Sauvé and Cohen. After the goal, the
P-Bruins proceeded to get back-to-back penalties. However, this did not stop Spooner from almost getting his
second goal of the night and season. The period turned into a game of four-on-four,
due to Nathan Mclver and Brett Sterling's roughing charge. The Pirates used this extra ice to
their advantage and Nick Ross got
the goal with 56 seconds left in the period, assisted by Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Matt
Watkins. The Pirates lead with
23 shots on net and a 2-1 score going into the final period.
Providence turned around the
game in the third period. With
fierce playing, Sauvé found the net for his 11th goal of the season,
assisted by Spooner and David Warsofsky at 5:50. Four minutes later, on the power play, Cohen's
shot from the point slid underneath Mannino's pads to give the P-Bruins the
lead. The go-ahead goal was assisted by David
Warsofsky and Josh Hennessy. The Pirates began to quicken their
pace after the P-Bruins broke the tie.
Hutchinson and Providence's defense worked hard in the last 5 minutes to
prevent goals, such as the Pirate's two-on-one opportunity to score. The last few minutes of the game were aggressive
and close, but the P-Bruins managed to pull through with the last win of the
season.
