P-BRUINS DEFEAT MONARCHS 1-0
Alumni Game Sunday at The Dunk
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 1-0 Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins goal came from Max Sauvé in the third period.
Right off the opening faceoff Providence controlled the momentum of the game, creating opportunities, reading Manchester's break out and intercepting passes. On the other end of the ice, P-Bruins net minder Anton Khudobin was solid between the pipes, easily blocking the Monarch's scoring attempts. All facets of the P-Bruins five-man unit was implemented in the offense, which included numerous rushes from Providence blue liners Colby Cohen, Andrew Bodnarchuk and Kevan Miller. Despite the chances on Monarchs goalie Martin Jones, Providence couldn't bury the puck and went into the first intermission tied at zero.
Throughout the second frame the play went back-and-forth between the P-Bruins and Monarchs with both teams getting quality scoring chances. Manchester nearly took the lead halfway through the period when a Monarchs' forward rang a slap shot off the post. Providence answered with their own near-goals shortly after with multiple attempts from the trio of Sauvé, Josh Hennessy and Jamie Tardif. However, neither team could capitalize and went into the final frame scoreless.
The Monarchs opened the final frame on an offensive fury, but solid play from the P-Bruins defense and impressive saves from Khudobin kept Manchester off the board. As the clock wound down and neither team could bury the puck, frustrations began to rise and at 14:29 Cohen dropped the mitts with Ray Kaunisto. Providence seemed to gain momentum from the fight as the line of Sauvé, Hennessy and Tardif continued to create great scoring chances. The trio's efforts paid off at 15:04 when Hennessy's shot off Jones into the slot where Sauvé was waiting. Sauvé's quick backhander made it through traffic and over Jones' stick to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Despite a last minute effort from the Monarchs, Khudobin came up with big saves to secure the 1-0 win fro Providence.
Khudobin's 30 saves earned him the win, his first shutout of the season. Jones suffered the loss, blocking 22 Providence attempts.
