Back at The Dunk Sunday vs. Albany
Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 4-3 Saturday evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Stefan Chaput, Jamie Arniel, Calle Ridderwall and Carter Camper. The P-Bruins are back at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday for Stadium Cup Night at 4:05 p.m. against the Albany Devils.
After a scoreless opening period, Providence took a 1-0 lead at the 2:14 mark of the second period. Kirk MacDonald forced a turnover at the Pirates blueline and fed the puck to Chaput. He fired it into the upper corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Portland tied the game at one while on a 5-on-3 power play. Garrett Stafford netted his first goal of the season, with Ryan Duncan and Mathieu Beaudoin picking up the assists. Fifty seconds later the P-Bruins retook the lead. Kevan Miller dug the puck out of the corner in his own zone and worked it ahead to Camper. He found Arniel charging down the ice giving Arniel a breakaway, where he tallied his first goal of the season. The Pirates tied the game at two at the 18:00 mark. Spencer Bennett scored his first goal of the season, while Matt Watkins and Beaudoin grabbed the assists. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.
The Pirates took their first lead of the game at the 40 second mark of the third period, while on the power play. Kyle Chipchura netted his first goal of the season, with Nathan Oystrick and Duncan getting the assists. Providence tied the game at three at the 6:21 mark. Zach Hamill held the puck in the neutral zone and fed it ahead to Craig Cunningham. He tossed the puck towards the goal where it was tipped into the net for his second goal of the season. The P-Bruins took the lead for good at the 7:50 mark, while on the power play. Hamill worked the puck out of the corner to Lane MacDermid in the right faceoff circle. He passed it in front of the net to Camper, who scored his first goal of the season. The P-Bruins held on for the 4-3 victory.
Karel St. Laurent stopped 37 of 40 shots for the P-Bruins, while Justin Pogge made 22 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
