Jamie Arniel Leads Providence to 3-2 Win vs. Connecticut

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,017 fans. The P-Bruins received two goals from Jamie Arniel and another from the reigning AHL Player of the Month, Trent Whitfield.

Despite some scoring opportunities late in the first frame, neither team could find the back of the net and went into the first intermission scoreless.

Providence came out of the locker room flying, testing Whale goalie Dov Grumet-Morris early and often. The P-Bruins nearly took the lead in the first two minutes of the period, but Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman's goal was waived off for incidental interference. However, Providence lit the lamp just a minute later on the power play. David Warsofsky found a breaking Maxime Sauvé, who then fed Arniel in the slot, beating Grumet-Morris five-hole at 2:22 of the second. The point was the first of Warsofsky's professional career.. Play between the Atlantic Division rivals started to get chippy after Arniel's goal, with fans seeing Lane MacDermid drop the mitts with Stu Bickel in his 20th fighting major of the season. Despite Connecticut's physical play, Providence answered on the scoreboard at 18:51. Grumet-Morris gave up a rebound from Kirk MacDonald's bullet, and Whitfield drilled it home to take a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission. LaVallee-Smotherman also assisted on the play.

The Whale opened up the scoring in the third frame at 4:21 when Brodie Dupont tallied his 15th goal of the season to bring Connecticut within one. Providence College alum Kyle MacKinnon was sent to the sin-bin 30 seconds later, but solid pressure from the P-Bruins' penalty kill led to a Whale turnover at the blue-line and an odd-man rush from both Stefan Chaput and Arniel. Arniel faked the initial shot and beat Grumet-Morris top-shelf at 6:46 of the third. The two-goal lead was short-lived when Kris Newbury brought the Whale within one at the nine-minute mark. Despite pulling Grumet-Morris in the last minute of the game, the last ditch effort from the Whale wasn't enough as the P-Bruins held on for the 3-2 win.

Michael Hutchinson earned the win, blocking 29 shots, while Grumet-Morris blocked 26 of 29 attempts, suffering the loss.

The P-Bruins travel Worcester on Saturday for the first in a home-and-home series with the Sharks. The team returns to The Dunk on Sunday for Team Poster Night in a 4:05 p.m. tilt against the Sharks.
