P-Bruins Return Home with Several New Faces
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins (26-30-3-2, 57 PTS, 6th Atlantic) host the Charlotte Checkers (34-20-2-6, 76 PTS, 3rd East) tonight at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for the teams' last of four regular season meetings in 2010-11. On the year, the P-Bruins are 0-3-0-0 versus the Checkers and 0-1-0-0 against the former ECHL namesake in Rhode Island.
Providence won the first game of its cross-country road trip 4-0 last Friday night in Abbotsford, but lost to the Heat 6-2 in the second game of the weekend series. This weekend, the P-Bruins once again have only two games, both at home. After tonight's contest, the P-Bruins are off on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday to host Bridgeport for the first of three straight home games against their neighboring-state rival.
Charlotte, meanwhile, has lost its last two road games with consecutive 4-3 shootouts, but won its most recent contest against Connecticut 1-0 last Saturday. Over their last six games, the Checkers are undefeated in regulation at 4-0-0-2.
Since its last game, Providence has lost four players and added five new ones. Through trades, the P-Bruins acquired Stefan Chaput, Anton Khudobin and David Laliberte. Ryan Donald and Alain Goulet were also both called up from the ECHL's Reading Royals. Jeff Penner, Brian McGrattan and Sean Zimmerman all left via trades, while Nolan Schaefer was loaned to the Hershey Bears this morning.
Jamie Arniel's 37 points are a P-Bruins team-high, while Max Sauve is first on the club with 17 goals. On the other side, current Carolina Hurricanes Jerome Samson leads all Checkers scorers with 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points. Providence goalie Michael Hutchinson is 10-8-0 with one shutout, a 3.13 GAA and a .903 save percentage, while newcomer Khudobin is 19-12-1 with a 2.58 GAA and .911 save percentage, all numbers from his time in Houston. Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy has a 19-9-3 record and a 2.65 GAA with a .915 save percentage. Justin Pogge leads the team with 1,073 saves. Pogge has a 15-13-3 record with a 3.12 GAA, saving 90.8% shots directed his way.
Samson leads all scorers in the season series with two goals and five assists. For Providence, Trent Whitfield has two goals, while five other current or former P-Bruins also have two points against the Checkers.
Between the pipes, Murphy is 1-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .969 save percentage against the P-B's. Pogge has a 2-0-0 mark versus Providence to go with a 2.50 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Hutchinson is 0-1-0 with a 5.05 GAA, blocking 83.3% of the Checkers' shots.
On special teams, the P-Bruins rank 30th (11.9%) in the league on the power play and 29th (77.0%) on when short-handed, while the Checkers are ninth on both the man-advantage (19.9%) and the penalty kill (84.2%).
