P-BRUINS ROB PIRATES IN SHOOTOUT
Hutchinson Shines in Return to Providence
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 4-3 in a shootout on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,321 fans. The P-Bruins had goals from Zach Hamill, Lane MacDermid and Jordan Caron in regulation, followed by Hamill and Jamie Arniel in the shootout.
The first five minutes of the opening frame saw both teams get scoring chances, but it was Providence that got on the board first at the 4:41 mark. Andrew Bodnarchuk found Jeremy Reich breaking out of the defensive zone, who then dished it to Hamill cutting to the slot. Hamill beat a defender with a toe-drag and left Jhonas Enroth looking with a beautiful effort on the top-shelf glove side. Portland nearly tied the score on a four-on-four opportunity with five minutes to play, but Michael Hutchinson kept the Pirates off the board to send the P-Bruins into the locker room leading 1-0.
Portland carried over its offensive momentum from the end of the first frame and tied the game with a goal from Jacob Legace six minutes into the second period. Hutchinson's glove was hot as he continued to make key saves to keep the game tied at one. MacDermid lit the lamp at the 15:31 mark, tipping in a lose puck in front of a screened Enroth. Trent Whitfield and Jeff Penner assisted on the play. Providence didn't play with the lead for long, though, as Portland's T.J. Brennan tied the game at two with just 23 seconds to play in the frame.
The P-Bruins continued to forecheck the Pirates aggressively, causing the Portland defense to turn the puck over. Caron's hard forecheck gave him his seventh goal of the season when he stripped Enroth of the puck behind the net for the wrap around into the empty net. MacDermid assisted on the play at 9:22 of the third. However, Portland was quick to respond and tied the game up at the 13:26 mark with a goal from Mark Mancari to send the game into extra time.
After five scoreless minutes of overtime, the teams headed to a shootout to decide the contest. Providence had goals from Hamill and Arniel as Hutchinson held four Portland shooters scoreless for the win, snapping the club's seven-game losing streak.
Blocking 47 of 50 shots through overtime, Hutchinson earned the win, while Enroth suffered the loss, stopping 26 attempts. Providence went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and 0-for-1 on the power play.
