McGrattan Doubles Points in 2-1 Win Over Springfield
Providence, RI - Brian McGrattan doubled his year-to-date point totals, tallying a goal and an assist, en route to earning first star honors as the Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 2-1 on Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 7,769 fans.
In an opening period with little offensive action, Providence scored on one of their three shots to go into the locker room leading Springfield by one. In a picturesque breakout, Yury Alexandrov found McGrattan breaking up the boards, who found Lane MacDermid streaking across zones. In a burst of speed, MacDermid danced around the Springfield defenders and beat Gustaf Wesslau low stick-side to put the P-Bruins up 1-0 at 8:58 of the first. Rookie Matt Dalton held the Falcons off the scoreboard for the remainder of the frame with acrobatic glove saves, but both teams spent time in the box with Nathan McIver and Matt Bartkowski picking up fighting majors.
In a penalty-filled second frame, Providence dominated the play offensively, but couldn't find the back of the net on their four power play opportunities. Instead, Springfield capitalized on its second power play of the frame and tied the game at 15:16 off a goal from Tomas Kubalik. Dalton's impressive play contributed to Providence's second goal when Colby Cohen and Andrew Bodnarchuk collected a rebound and found McGrattan rushing up the right wing. McGrattan faked a slap shot and beat Wesslau with a snap shot, to give the P-Bruins a 2-1 lead at 17:58 of the second.
The third period play went back and forth with both Providence and Springfield testing the goalies, however neither team was able to get on the board. Providence held off a late six-man offensive rush from the Falcons in the closing minute to hold on for the 2-1 win.
Dalton earned the win, blocking 32 of 33 attempts, while Wesslau stopped 23 shots. Providence went scoreless on five power plays and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
After tonight, Providence plays its next three games on the road, beginning Saturday in Worcester. The P-Bruins are home next on Feb. 11 against Hershey at 7:05 p.m. for Rhode Island Reds T-Shirt Night, courtesy of Dunkin' Donuts.
