P-BRUINS FALL 3-1 TO WHALE

Providence Drops First Ever Meeting with Connecticut

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the newly-branded Connecticut Whale 3-1 in a penalty-filled contest on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins' lone goal came from veteran David Ling.

The P-Bruins and the Whale were held scoreless in a muscle-powered first period with both teams heading to the box early and often in the frame. Veteran Nathan McIver dropped the gloves and threw some punches in a quick decision with Devin DiDiomete at the 8:08 mark. Both players headed to the box on five-minute fighting majors. Despite playing short-handed or four-on-four for much of the period, Jeff Penner was able to blast slap shots through traffic and cause commotion in front of Cameron Talbot. The P-Bruins went 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-of-2 on the penalty kill in the frame.

The Whale got on the board just 51 seconds into the second period when Evgeny Grachev beat Michael Hutchinson. Kris Newbury picked up the assist on the opening goal. The boxing matches continued throughout the period with four different Providence players dropping the gloves with members of the Whale. Lane MacDermid, the penalty minute leader last year on the P-Bruins, laid a few rights on Justin Soryal at the 3:08 mark. Providence's veteran tough-guy McIver dropped the gloves for the second time in the contest when he took on Stu Bickel behind Hutchinson's net, sending Bickel to the ice with some upper cuts. In between all the fighting, the P-Bruins were able to create opportunities in Connecticut's zone and capitalized at the 17:34 mark when Ling blanked Talbot with a quick wrist shot from point-blank range in the slot. Wyatt Smith picked up his fifth helper of the season on the game-tying goal.

Providence opened the period flying coming off the momentum of their late second period goal, but were repeatedly blanked by Talbot. The Whale answered at the 6:07 mark when Chad Kolarik capitalized on a P-Bruins turnover behind Hutchinson and fed it to Oren Eizenman for a one-timer in the slot. Kelsey Tessier also assisted on the play. Just over five minutes later, Jeremy Williams found the back of the net when he one-timed a pass from Newbury. Pavel Valentenko picked up his fifth assist of the season on the goal. Providence's best opportunity came when a shot from Yury Alexandrov at the point deflected off of a stick and hit the crossbar with just over five minutes remaining in the contest. Despite a late power play, the P-Bruins were held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the frame to give Connecticut the 3-1 win.

Hutchinson suffered the loss, stopping 31 of 34 shots faced, while Talbot blocked 27 shots. Providence went 0-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
