Back at The Dunk Friday vs. Springfield
Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 6-5 Saturday evening at the MassMutual Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Steven Kampfer, Kirk MacDonald, Jordan Knackstedt and three goals from Maxime Sauve. The P-Bruins are back at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday for Hat Night at 7:05 p.m. against the Falcons.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 2:52 mark of the opening period. Zach Hamill won the face off and sent the puck to Yuri Alexandrov at the left point. He put a shot on net and Sauve scored off the rebound, his first goal of the season. Providence made it 2-0 at the 3:49 mark. Jeff Penner cleared the puck out of his zone ahead to Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman. He passed the puck into the slot for Kampfer, who tallied his first goal of the season. The P-Bruins took a 3-0 advantage at the 9:14 mark. Kampfer fed the puck to MacDonald, who backhanded the puck into the net for his second goal of the season. The Falcons got on the board at the 16:43 mark. Tom Sestito netted his first goal of the season, while Grant Clitsome recorded the lone assist. Providence finished off the first period scoring with a goal at the 16:56 mark. Levi Nelson dug the puck out of the corner, who fed it up the boards to Lane MacDermid. He found Knackstedt in the right faceoff circle, who tallied his first goal of the season. Providence led 4-1 going into the first intermission.
Providence made it 5-1 at the 44 second mark of the second period. Sauve scored unassisted, his second goal of the game. Springfield got back on the board at the 6:26 mark. Sestito netted his second goal of the game and season, while Ben Guite and Tomas Kubalik grabbed the assists. The Falcons made it 5-3 going into the second intermission with a power play goal at the 10:11 mark. Michael Blunden tallied his second goal of the season, with Sestito and David Savard getting the assists.
The P-Bruins took a 6-3 advantage at the 12:03 mark of the third period. Sauve grabbed his third goal of the game for the hat trick, while Penner had the lone assist. Springfield made it interesting, scoring twice in the last few minutes of the game. Matt Calvert netted his second goal of the season at the 16:42 mark, with Sestito getting the lone assist and then Blunden recorded his second goal of the game and third goal of the season at the 19:03 mark, while Savard had the lone assist. The P-Bruins held on from there for the 6-5 victory.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 31 of 36 shots for the P-Bruins, while Daren Machesney made 3 saves and Dan Taylor made 20 saves for the Falcons. The P-Bruins were 0-for-1 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return to The Dunk Friday for Hat Night at 7:05 p.m. against the Falcons. The P-Bruins hit the road next Saturday versus the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:00 p.m. Providence wraps up next weekend at The Dunk Sunday for Magnet Schedule Night at 4:05 p.m. against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
