P-BRUINS DEFEAT HEAT IN SHOOTOUT 4-3
Back at The Dunk Friday vs. Manchester Monarchs
Abbotsford, BC - The Providence Bruins defeated the Abbotsford Heat 4-3 Tuesday evening in a shootout at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Craig Weller, Jordan Knackstedt and Mikko Lehtonen and in the shootout from Knackstedt. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday at 7:05 p.m. for Sport Bottle Night against the Manchester Monarchs.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 4:12 mark of the opening period. Guillaume Lefebvre had the puck behind the net and set it to Kirk MacDonald, who found Weller in front of the net. Weller took a shot and the puck slipped into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Abbotsford tied the game at one at the 13:33 mark. David VanderGulik netted his 10th goal of the season, while Brad Cole recorded the lone assist. Providence retook the lead at the 16:09 mark. Brad Marchand tipped the puck to Trent Whitfield, giving the P-Bruins a 2-on-1 opportunity. Whitfield found Knackstedt in the left face-off circle, who tallied his seventh goal of the season. The P-Bruins led 2-1 going into the first intermission.
The Heat tied the game at two at the 12:11 mark of the second period, while on the power play. Brett Sutter netted his ninth goal of the season, with Josh Meyers and Cam Cunning picking up the assists. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.
Providence once again retook the lead at the 5:17 mark of the third period. Jeff Penner fed the puck to Lehtonen, giving him a breakaway. Lehtonen scored top shelf, his 22nd goal of the season. Abbotsford battled back to tie the game at three at the 16:07 mark, while on the power play. Shawn Weller tallied his fifth goal of the season, with Meyers and Keith Seabrook grabbing the assists. The game went into overtime tied at three.
After a scoreless overtime the game headed into a shootout. It took until round three for either team to score, when Knackstedt netted a goal for the P-Bruins. Neither team was able to score after that as the P-Bruins went onto the 4-3 shootout victory.
Kevin Regan stopped 29 of 32 shots in regulation and all five shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while David Shantz made 30 saves in regulation and three saves in the shootout for the Heat. The P-Bruins were 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Providence wraps up the road trip Wednesday in Abbotsford at 10:30 p.m. The P-Bruins return home to The Dunk Friday at 7:05 p.m. for Sport Bottle Night against the Monarchs.
