Providence Hosts Springfield for Kids Hat Day at The Dunk

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins (22-23-3-0, 47 PTS, 7th Atlantic) host the Springfield Falcons (16-25-8-2, 42 PTS, 8th Atlantic) this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for the teams' eighth of 10 regular season meetings in 2009-10. On the year, the P-Bruins are 6-1-0-0 against the Falcons, including 3-0-0-0 in Rhode Island.

Providence sits just five points out of a potential playoff spot after last night's 8-2 trouncing of Springfield at the MassMutual Center. Brad Marchand led seven multiple-point performers for the P-Bruins with three points, including one goal and two assists. Kevin Regan earned the win, stopping 22 shots. Among the season-high eight strikes, Providence converted five times on the power play in six tries. Entering play last night, the P-Bruins were just five for their last 71 with the man-advantage. Today's game marks the back-half of a home-and-home series, leaving the clubs with only two meetings over the final three months of the regular season.

The P-Bruins are led offensively by PlanetUSA All-Star Mikko Lehtonen's 14 goals and 35 points. He and fellow All-Star Andy Wozniewski share the team-lead with 21 assists. In net, Dany Sabourin has seen the bulk of the action for Providence, showing an 18-16-0 record, two shutouts and a 2.46 goals-against-average. On the other side, Colton Fretter has 20 goals, while Charles Linglet leads Springfield with 49 points and 38 assists. Between the pipes, Jean-Philippe Levasseur is 5-11-0 with a 3.36 GAA.

Head-to-head, Providence's Trent Whitfield leads all players in the series with nine points and seven assists, doing so in only five games played. Wozniewski, P-Bruin Jeff LoVecchio and Fretter each have four goals. Fretter paces Springfield with six points. In the crease, Sabourin is 4-1-0 with a 1.59 GAA and Levasseur is 0-3-0 with a 4.41 GAA.

On special teams, Providence ranks 19th (16.9%) in the league on the power play and 17th (81.7%) on the penalty kill, while Springfield is 16th (17.6%) with the man-advantage and 25th (79.6%) when short-handed.

The P-Bruins return to action on Friday against the Portland Pirates at 7:05 p.m. for Rhode Island Lottery Hat Night with hats free to the first 3,000 fans in attendance. On Saturday, Providence begins a home-and-home series with the Worcester Sharks, starting with a 7:05 p.m. tilt. The P-Bruins host the Sharks on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for Jumbocard Day with jumbocards free to the first 1,000 kids age 12 and under.
