P-BRUINS DEFEAT SOUND TIGERS 2-1
Back at The Dunk Friday, December 11 vs. Lowell Devils
Bridgeport, CT - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 2-1 Wednesday evening in a shootout at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The P-Bruins got their lone goal in regulation from Mikko Lehtonen and in the shootout got goals from Lehtonen, Zach Hamill and Brad Marchand. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday, December 11 at 7:05 p.m. for Winter Hat Night against the Lowell Devils.
The Sound Tigers took a 1-0 advantage at the 3:45 mark of the opening period. Greg Mauldin tallied his ninth goal of the season, while Jesse Joensuu and Justin DiBenedetto recorded the assists. Bridgeport led going into the first intermission 1-0.
After a scoreless second period, the P-Bruins tied the game at one at the 1:17 mark of the third period. Matt Marquardt had the puck at the left face off circle and passed it off his backhand to Lehtonen at the top of the slot. He shot the puck into the net for his ninth goal of the season. The game went into overtime tied at one.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went into a shootout. Lehtonen scored in the first round to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 advantage and then Hamill scored in the second round to put Providence on top 2-0. The Sound Tigers answered back with goals from Greg Moore in the second round and Justin DiBenedetto in the fourth round to tie the shootout at two. In the fifth round Marchand scored and the Sound Tigers did not convert as Providence went on to the 2-1 shootout victory.
Dany Sabourin stopped 24 of 25 shots for the P-Bruins, while Nathan Lawson made 32 saves for the Sound Tigers. The P-Bruins were 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Providence continues their road trip Friday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee against the Portland Pirates at 7:05 p.m., before wrapping up the week Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center against the Pirates at 7:00 p.m. Information on P-Bruins tickets for the 2009-10 season can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto the team website at http://www.providencebruins.com/.
