Boston Adds Defensive Depth with One-Year Contracts

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, entering their 18th season in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have signed goaltender Dany Sabourin and defenseman Drew Fata to one-year contracts. Per club policy, terms of the deals will not be disclosed.

Sabourin, 28, appeared in 19 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2008-09 season, registering a 6-8-2 record, 2.85 goals-against-average and .898 save percentage. The goalie was traded from Pittsburgh with Ryan Stone and a 2011 fourth round pick to the Edmonton Oilers on January 17 in exchange for Mathieu Garon. Sabourin spent the remainer of the year in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, going 5-6-2 with a 3.17 GAA and .904 save percentage.

Entering his 11th professional season, Sabourin has appeared in 57 NHL games with Pittsburgh, the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames, compiling an 18-25-4 record, 2.87 GAA and .898 save percentage. Sabourin had a career-year in 2005-06 with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, going 30-14-4 with four shutouts, a 2.26 GAA and a .922 save percentage to win the AHL's Aldege (Baz) Bastien and Harry (Hap) Holmes Memorial Awards.

The Val D'Or, Quebec, native has a career record of 130-110-22 between the NHL, AHL and ECHL since turning pro in 1998-99 with the Saint John Flames. Sabourin was selected by Calgary 108th overall in the fourth round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Fata, 25, split the 2008-09 season between the San Antonio Rampage and Binghamton Senators, totaling an AHL career-best 16 points (7g, 9a) and 141 penalty minutes in 75 games overall. The defenseman has appeared in eight NHL games, all as a member of the New York Islanders, over his first six seasons as a pro, notching two points (g, a) and nine PIM.

In his career, Fata has 95 points (33g, 62a) and 1,005 PIM in 385 games between the NHL, AHL and ECHL. The native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was selected by Pittsburgh 86th overall in the third round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Sabourin and Fata were teammates with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers from 2004-06.
