Rookie Called Up to Practice with Big Club
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in the playoffs for the 15th time in 17 American Hockey League seasons, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have recalled goaltender Adam Courchaine. He is expected to join the parent Bruins today for practice at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, Massachusetts. With the move, the P-Bruins have 27 players on their roster, including 15 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.
Courchaine, 20, joined Providence on April 3 and appeared in one game for the P-Bruins during the regular season, stopping 29 of 32 shots in an April 11 road loss to the Worcester Sharks. Prior to his recall to Providence, Courchaine appeared in 30 games for the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League, finishing the year with a 13-11-2 mark, along with a 3.28 goals-against-average and two shutouts. His junior season came to an end on March 31 after Ottawa was defeated in a seven-game first round series by the Niagara IceDogs. Courchaine went 2-3 with a 3.00 GAA in the postseason, earning a 32-save shutout in Game 6 of the series before suffering an overtime loss in the decisive Game 7.
Courchaine spent nearly a month with Providence late last season for his first professional experience, going 2-0-0 with a 1.67 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage over two starts and one relief appearance. The young net-minder made his pro debut on April 6, 2008 versus the Manchester Monarchs, earning a shootout win with 21 saves and a four-for-four showing in the shootout.
In his two junior seasons, Courchaine is 30-36-6 with a 3.25 GAA in 78 regular season games, plus a 2-7 mark and 3.56 GAA in the playoffs. The undrafted native of Kanata, Ontario, was signed by Boston on September 30, 2007.
