P-BRUINS TOP LOWELL 4-3 TO WIN OPENER
Providence Home Sunday vs. Springfield at the Dunkin' Donuts Center
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Lowell Devils 4-3 in a shootout Wednesday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got goals in regulation from Johnny Boychuk, Byron Bitz and Vladimir Sobotka and in the shootout from Mikko Lehtonen and Martin St. Pierre. The P-Bruins are back at home Sunday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for magnet schedule night versus the Springfield Falcons at 4:05 p.m.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 8:46 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. Boychuk tallied his first goal of the season off a shot from the right face off circle with St. Pierre and Martins Karsums getting the assists. The Devils tied the game at one with a power play goal of their own at the 13:54 mark. Jon DiSalvatore scored the goal with Tyler Eckford and Brad Mills recording the assists. The P-Bruins went into the first period with the lead, scoring another power play goal at the 15:35 mark. Matt Hunwick made a pass from the left face off circle to Bitz, who was waiting on the right post. The puck deflected off of Bitz's stick and knee before heading into the net. Sobotka picked up the second assist on the goal as Providence took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the P-Bruins took a two goal lead at the 2:24 mark. Sobotka tallied the team's third power play goal of the game with Brad Marchand and Bitz getting the assists. The Devils scored at the 10:17 mark of the second period to pull back within a goal. Vladimir Zharkov netted the goal with Rod Pelley and Nicklas Bergfors grabbing the assists. Providence took a 3-2 lead into the third period.
In the third period the Devils came back to tie the game at three and force overtime. At the 10:58 mark, Zharkov tallied his second goal of the evening, with Pelley and Mark Fraser getting the assists.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went into the shootout, where in the first round, Lehtonen scored by wrapping the puck around the skate of Devils net minder Scott Clemmensen and into the net. Lowell did not score in the first round and neither team scored in the second or third round. In round four, St. Pierre scored to give the P-Bruins a 2-0 advantage. With the Devils needing to score to force a fifth round P-Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask stopped DiSalvatore as Providence went on to the 4-3 shootout victory.
Rask stopped 19 of 22 shots he faced in regulation and all four shots he faced in the shootout, while Clemmensen made 24 saves in regulation and two saves in the shootout for the Devils. The P-Bruins were 3-for-11 on the power play and 7-for-8 on the penalty kill.
