P-BRUINS REGAIN FIRST PLACE
Providence Defeats Lowell 6-2 on Sunday at The Dunk
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins offense exploded for three goals in each the first and second periods to defeat the Lowell Devils 6-2 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,636 fans. The P-Bruins received two goals apiece from rookies Zach Hamill and Jeff Penner while Adam McQuaid and Jordan Knackstedt added single tallies. Tuukka Rask, appearing in his 100th professional North American game, made 21 saves for his 29th win of the year.
The P-Bruins opened the scoring 6:39 into the first period when Penner beat Devils goalie Jeff Frazee with a wrist shot from the left circle. Captain Jeremy Reich and rookie Brad Marchand earned the assists on the play. Providence doubled its advantage at the 12:44 mark when Kirk MacDonald led Hamill to the net and he walked the puck in for a 2-0 Providence lead. Matt Marquardt added an assist on the play. Hamill and MacDonald teamed up again with 1:51 remaining in the period as MacDonald forced a turnover from inside the left circle, fed the puck to Hamill and he beat Frazee again for his 11th goal of the year. Providence took a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.
The onslaught continued in the second frame when Penner buried a puck past Frazee top shelf 3:25 into the period for a power play goal and a 4-0 P-Bruins lead. Mikko Lehtonen and Martin St. Pierre picked up the assists to extend their point-streaks to three and four games, respectively. Providence scored a second man-advantage goal at the 9:40 mark when McQuaid fired the puck toward the net from the right wing and it trickled past Frazee to force him from the game. Reich and Marchand both registered their second assists of the game on the goal. Frazee worked 29:40 and blocked 14 of 19 shots. On came Dave Caruso, who allowed a goal to Knackstedt on the first shot he faced only 1:22 later. Dan Ryder picked up the only assist. The Devils' Matt Halischuk scored a power play goal at 14:53 of the second to pull Lowell back within five. Nicklas Bergfors and former Providence captain Jay Leach recorded the assists. The P-Bruins led 6-0 after two periods.
Lowell scored the only goal of the third as former Providence College forward Jon DiSalvatore deflected a shot past Rask. Bergfors and Ryan Murphy had the assists. Providence went on for the 6-2 win to take sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.
Rask earned the win while Frazee suffered the loss. Caruso worked the final 30:20 in net for Lowell, stopping nine of 10 shots. Providence out-shot Lowell 29-23 overall. The P-Bruins scored twice in five power plays while the Devils scored one man-advantage goal in six opportunities. The teams combined for 98 penalty minutes, 84 of which came in the second period. Lowell totaled 57 PIM to Providence's 39. The Devils' Rod Pelley and Pierre-Luc Leblond and P-Bruins defenseman Matt Stephenson were all issued game misconducts.
