Season Opener Wednesday at The Dunk

Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Falcons 3-2 in a shootout Saturday evening at the MassMutual Center.  The P-Bruins got goals in regulation from Mikko Lehtonen and Johnny Boychuk and in the shootout from Jordan Knackstedt.  The P-Bruins are back at home Wednesday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for opening night versus the Lowell Devils at 7:05 p.m.  The P-Bruins finished the pre-season with a 2-1 record.

After a scoreless opening period, the P-Bruins scored at the 2:53 mark with a delayed penalty coming.  Jeff Penner worked the puck from the left board to Brad Marchand in between the circles.  Marchand passed the puck to Lehtonen, who was parked just outside the left side of the net and he scored his first goal of the pre-season.  Providence took a 2-0 advantage at the 7:13 mark.  Boychuk netted his first goal of the pre-season, while Levi Nelson and Kirk MacDonald picked up the assists.

The Falcons pulled within a goal at the 4:49 mark of the third period.  Sebastien Bisaillon scored from the right point with Bryan Young and Liam Reddox grabbing the assists.  Springfield tied the game at two at the 7:14 mark.  Tim Sestito tallied from between the face off circles with Viacheslav Trukhno and Young recording the assists.  The game went into overtime tied at two.

After a scoreless overtime, Trukhno scored the first shootout goal for the Falcons.  Carl Corazzini scored in the third round giving Springfield a 2-0 advantage.  Providence cut it in half when Knackstedt scored in the fourth round, but the P-Bruins were unable to score in the fifth round as the Falcons went on to the 3-2 shootout victory.

Kevin Regan stopped all 12 shots he faced and Kevin Nastiuk stopped 11 of 13 shots for the P-Bruins, while Devan Dubnyk made 20 saves for the Falcons.  The P-Bruins were 0-for-8 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
