In a battle for second place in the Eastern Conference, the Providence Bruins and Springfield Falcons came out ready to play. The pace was fast throughout the first period, but the Falcons couldn't keep up with the Bruins for long. In a play that started with a beautiful break out and neutral zone transition, Kyle MacKinnon drove to the net and Florek pushed the puck past a sprawling Curtis McElhinney to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:47 of the first. Bobby Robins also assisted on the goal.

The Bruins took control of all aspects of the game in the second period. After the Bruins pressured the Falcons' net hard, both teams exchanged some pushes and shoves behind Springfield's net. Robins and Bryan Helmer were assessed with roughing penalties. Despite the four-on-four play, the Bruins thrived and Torey Krug and Bourque made a rush into the Falcons' zone and Krug fed Bourque with a saucer pass over a falling Falcons' defenseman for the one-timer past McElhinney at 4:26. The Falcons had two more power play opportunities, but the Bruins penalty kill (84.6%) was flawless and held the Falcons off the scoreboard.

The Falcons answered back in the third period with two lucky goals. Springfield scored twice within the last five minutes to even the score 2-2 and force an overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the teams were headed to a shootout to decide the game for the second time in the season series between the teams.
